Square Ledge is a half mile hike in Pinkham Notch that offers excellent views of the notch, Boott Spur, Tuckerman Ravine, Lion's Head and Huntington Ravine. To the north Mount Adams and Mount Madison are visible. Of course the weather must cooperate or none of this may be visible. The trailhead is almost directly across Rte. 16 from the entrance to the AMC's Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch. Follow the Lost Pond Trail across the footbridge over the Ellis River. Here the Square Ledge Trail breaks off to the left. On the way up there is a view called "Ladies' Lookout" on a short spur to the left (north). Back on the trail you will soon ascend to the base of Square Ledge on the side of Wildcat Mountain. The trail now rises steeply through a v-slot to the top of Square Ledge. It is 500' elevation gain from the parking lot. This last section of trail is a steep scramble and some may find it difficult on the way up or down or both. Also, the top is a precipice, it is a long drop. Use common sense and caution as you would anywhere in the mountains. In inclement weather, especially icy conditions it would be foolhardy to attempt this ledge without proper gear, which could include crampons.
